WPC: Reflecting On Our Differences

A quote from Andre Lorde goes thusIt is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” , we are so alike but very different and that thought stayed with me throughout my guided tour of this iconic landmark in Lagos.  The Central Mosque, Lagos  a massive religious building right smack in the middle of the ever bustling Lagos island.

A very beautiful and well crafted building, it’s the pride of the Islamic community in Lagos. Had a chance to go round in a tour organised by The British Council Lagos for the Open House Lagos  2017 event.  Some very beautiful churches where also on the tour but we couldn’t access them at the time of the tour….. Weddings and more weddings but we could enter the mosque and that was great.

The order of things is a little different, the head must be covered for women and no shoes allowed inside. Yup, we moved through the entire building barefoot, it was nice though it meant no annoying footsteps echoing all over 🙂 .

I noticed a theme throughout the building and the BW image below shows it well, The Mosaic Theme.  From the walls to the floor to the windows the pattern repeated itself in different forms.

I’m Christian and getting to see the inner workings of a grand mosque was a real eye opener, our buildings maybe different, our thinking different but underneath it all we all want the same thing.

  1. A great selection of photos, especially the B&W. To you and me, knowing that we are all the same, probably all want the same things in life, trying to move through life unscathed, seems simple. I just don’t know why it isn’t for others.

    1. Thanks. We all don’t think alike and we all don’t arrive at the answer in the same way, some take years while some need a particular experience to realise this universal truth.
